I first took an interest in meteorology after seeing my first tornado on June 9, 2003 (image left). Shortly after 7 p.m., a supercell moving east southeast just to the north of my hometown of O'Neill Nebraska dropped this large wedge tornado. Damage from this storm was relatively minimal, but I'll never forget the influence it had on my life. I checked all the library books I could on weather, clouds or tornadoes. During junior high and high school, I would take opportunities to do amatuer storm chasing and attend any weather awareness events put on by the National Weather Service. I knew I wanted to go to school for a degree in meteorology.

About

I started at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the fall of 2011.  I quickly took an interest in convective weather and severe thunderstorm characteristics.  During the spring of my freshman year, Dr. Van Den Broeke offered me a position as an undergraduate researcher through the UCARE program.  For two years we worked on a project studying the characteristics of lightning within tropical cyclones.  Specifically we studied Hurricane Irene (image right) which made landfall in August of 2011. This work was presented at the International Lightning Detection Conference in the spring of 2014, the same spring that I graduated with my B.S. from UNL.
